In short

What CØNVERT knows about you, and what josepmiguel.com learns when you download it. For the app the short answer is nothing; the rest is written to be read.

Who is responsible

José P. Miguel, a private individual, in Portugal. Contact: josepmiguel88@gmail.com.

There is no company behind this: CØNVERT is a personal project, and it is free.

This policy covers the CØNVERT app for the Mac, its page at josepmiguel.com/convert, and the download that page leads to.

02

The app collects nothing

CØNVERT has no account, no usage statistics and no crash reports, and it does not look for updates. It makes no connection to the internet at all: there is no code in it that could send anything anywhere — to me or to anybody else.

So nothing about you, or about what you do with it, reaches me.

03

Your files

Files are converted on your Mac, by macOS’s own frameworks (ImageIO, PDFKit, AVFoundation and, for reading text and cutting out a background, Vision). Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

The result is written to the same folder as the original. If that folder cannot be written to, or if you choose it in the settings, it goes to your Downloads instead. It never takes the name of a file that is already there: a name in use gets “ 2”, “ 3” and so on, and no file you had is written over.

Text (OCR) also puts what it read on the Mac’s clipboard, as if you had copied it yourself.

04

What it looks at

To know when to open the wheel, it looks, about thirty times a second, at three things: whether the mouse button is down, which modifier keys (⇧, ⌥, ⌘) are held, and what is on the system’s drag pasteboard — the list of files being dragged.

It only looks. It does not record what you type, it does not see the screen, and it keeps nothing of what it looks at. None of it needs Accessibility, Input Monitoring or Screen Recording permission, and it asks for none of them.

05

What it keeps on your Mac

Two things, both in the app’s preferences on your Mac (~/Library/Preferences/com.josepmiguel.convert.plist):

  • your settings — the language, the key that opens the wheel, where new files go, whether it is paused, the quality for JPG and HEIC, and whether you have seen its window once;
  • a list of the last 40 files it made — where each one is, what was done, and when — so you can find them again from its window.

“Clear list”, in its window, empties the list. Throwing the app away, and that file with it, removes everything it kept. None of it leaves your Mac.

If you turn on “Open at login”, macOS puts it in its own list of login items (System Settings › General › Login Items), where you can turn it off too.

06

This page and the download

This page is served by josepmiguel.com’s own web server. Like most web servers, it writes a line to a log for every request it answers: the IP address it came from, the time, the address asked for, and what the browser says about itself.

The log is there to keep the site running and to find faults and abuse, and it is kept only as long as that requires. Legal basis: legitimate interest in keeping the site working and safe — Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR.

CØNVERT is downloaded from GitHub, where its installer is kept: when you press download, the request goes to GitHub (owned by Microsoft), and its privacy rules apply. GitHub counts how many times the file has been downloaded — a number, with nothing about who — and anybody can look it up; nothing on josepmiguel.com counts who presses the button.

The site counts no visits, uses no usage statistics and sets no cookies; this page keeps nothing in your browser and fetches nothing from anybody else — its typefaces included.

07

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to see whatever is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to have its use restricted, or object to that use. The only thing here that can be about you is that log; write to josepmiguel88@gmail.com and you will have an answer within a month.

You can also complain to the Portuguese data protection authority, the CNPD — cnpd.pt — or to the one in the country where you live.

08

Changes

If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a version of CØNVERT ever connects to anything at all, this policy says so before that version is offered here.

  • as tuas definições — a língua, a tecla que abre a roda, para onde vão os ficheiros novos, se está em pausa, a qualidade de JPG e HEIC, e se já viste a janela dele uma vez;

Nada disto sai do teu Mac.
